Self Portrait

When I started the project I had no ideas or plan on what I was going to do or how, I never really did come up with a plan. I just started and it slowly came together the more I worked on it. Not having a plan caused me to make quite a few mistakes that could have been avoided. On the other hand it did allow me to not worry if it was turning out the way I imagined. In this piece of art, I didn’t know how to showcase my personality with just images and words. I instead used many different colored magazine clippings to make the background bright and colorful, as I see myself as having a colorful personality. As for the portrait portion of the art piece I followed the original image as much as I could. I didn’t find the need to change the imaginary of the portrait. I chose not to change much from the original photo, because I don’t like any imperfections in my art. The way I create any of my art pieces is in a very messy and uncontrolled manner. I found that the nose and shadowing was the hardest part. I decided to use a sharpie to outline what I could not with magazines. When I got to the hair I had to improvise since I hadn't been able to find enough so I instead used mainly different shades of dark brown flooring and backgrounds from magazine articles. |

The objective of the project was to combine a piece of technology and human anatomy together to make a semi realistic art piece. I chose to use a retro TV and girls figure, I am still a little unsure on the inspiration for this piece other than the fact that I thought it would make a cool art piece. The term technology to me means any sort of electronic device or electricity. I would be affected a lot if technology went away. I would have a hard time getting around without GPS and I would find it difficult to do homework or learn anything new. Three types of technology my family depend on are probably our phones, computers, and TV. We use our phones and computers everyday to keep in touch and find things out. We use our TV for entertainment and as a way to keep up with current events since we do not receive the paper. I chose to interview my dad, he grew up in the 80s and had some technology in his later years of highschool. He had partylines, which he was always afraid that someone was listening in on your conversations and found it annoying having to wait for a turn on the phone. He said when he got internet it was much easier to find things out, rather than having to go to the library and look it up in an encyclopedia. He also said it was easier to meet new people because AOL had chat rooms. When he got his first phone he thought it was very cool, because he was the first one in his class to get a cellphone, it was a bag phone. He overall said that the internet and phones helped with day to day things.

I struggled to find the focus of my art project. I didn’t know which direction I wanted to go in, whether I wanted to go in a fun or serious way. In the end, I decided to go with a medium of fun and seriousness. My practice print was of succulents that had a little quote. I figured I should do something a little more complex, I went on my Pinterest until I got enough inspiration for my wasp. I think I choose the wasp because they are very beautiful and captivating. They are so small yet so strong.
I stayed away from words when doing this project, because I didn’t feel as though I could accomplish the level of quality that I would want. I really struggled with cutting around all the same pieces of the wings and not cutting to deep. I also figured the wasp’s wings would be a good challenge for me. The small flowers at the time of the print were also a difficult part of the project, trying not to slip up and cut off the petals. |

I decided that I wanted to push myself to make something I had never tried before, so I made a jacket. I made the jacket out of trash bags to show awareness for using animals to make fur coats and leather jackets. Animals are more than just the things you need from them. If we as a society keep killing animals just to make a jacket or a pair of shoes then at some point we won’t have any more to take from. I also thought that using garbage bags could show that things have more than one use and once or done using something you can use it again. Upcycle old clothes or materials is a great way to save money and the environment. I started the project by making a pattern by tracing my jacket on some large drawing paper. I then ironed to garbage bags to make 4 layers so the sewing machine wouldn’t shred the bags up. I laid out the pieces on the paper and cut around making sure to add one inch for the sewing room. Since I had never sewn before I had to do a lot of research to figure out how to use a sewing machine. Once I had gotten ahold of a sewing machine, I sewed all of the pieces together. I got the jacket together and then later added the buttons. I really do like the final results, I think that it turned out the way I wanted it too.
